ISLAMABAD – The US Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld President Donald Trump’s controversial ban on travellers from five mostly Muslim countries — a big victory for the Republican leader after a tortuous legal battle.
The justices ruled 5-4 that the most recent version of the ban, which the administration claims is justified by national security concerns, was valid.
The version at issue includes North Korea with the five mainly Muslim nations — Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen.
Certain officials from Venezuela are also targeted by the measure. The Supreme Court allowed it to go largely into effect in December while the legal challenge continued.

The court held that the challengers had failed to show that the ban violates either US immigration law or the US Constitution’s First Amendment prohibition on the government, favouring one religion over another.
The travel ban was one of Trump’s promises made during the ‘xenophobic’ campaign and has been a central part of his presidency and “America First” approach.
The decision was lauded by Trump with a Wow!.

Trump issued his first version just a week after taking office in January 2017, though it was quickly halted by the courts.
