Afghan president congratulates Pakistan’s PM-elect on polls victory

ISLAMABAD – Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani has felicitated the election victory of the chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan while welcoming his statement about his intention to pursue policies supportive of peace and stability in the war-torn county.

“We both agreed to overcome the past and to lay a new foundation for a prosperous political, social and economic future of both countries Afghanistan and Pakistan,” the Afghan president said on his Twitter handle.

Earlier today, PTI spokesman Naeem-ul-Haq told the media that Ghani also invited the incoming Pakistani PM to visit Kabul.

“Ghani told Imran that Pakistan and Afghanistan have historic relations and invited him for a tour of the country,” the PTI leader added.

Haque further said that the PTI chief informed the Afghan president that he will visit Kabul once he assumes power.

Imran, during his victory speech on Thursday, had said: “We want to work in every possible way to ensure peace in Afghanistan. The country has suffered the most in the war on terror. Afghanistan’s people need peace. We want peace there. If there is peace in Afghanistan, there will be peace in Pakistan. We will make every effort to achieve peace there. We want to have open borders with Afghanistan one day.”

PTI is currently in talks with various political parties for support to form the government in the Centre and Punjab.

According to unofficial results announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Saturday, Imran Khan’s party has emerged victorious in Wednesday’s polls by winning 116 of the 270 National Assembly seats. Meanwhile, the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) have bagged 64 and 43 seats respectively.

At least 12,570 candidates contested for 577 provincial and 272 national assemblies in Wednesday’s polls. Other than the independent candidates, there are as many as 106 political parties whose candidates faced off others in their respective constituencies.
