WhatsApp plans to roll out dark mode feature

MENLO PARK – Social messaging service WhatsApp is expected to roll out a new dark mode feature in its upcoming update.

The new User Interference (UI) will provide a dark background to the traditional WhatsApp interface; this can be useful at night, as it reduces the strain on users’ eyes.

According to WABetaInfo, the new UI will require several improvements before an official update is rolled out and this is the first major cosmetic change in the app since 2009.

The new update will also consume lesser battery especially for devices running OLED and AMOLED displays, as each pixel is essentially an individual LED in case of such displays. The LED pixels are turned off when displaying blacks, which in turn results not only in better contrast ratio but also power saving.

The shift from repetition that the ‘Dark Mode’ provides has become part of various social media applications since the recent past, such as Twitter and YouTube.

Moreover, the Facebook-owned company is also likely to roll out swipe to reply feature in its Android application.

The new feature allows Android users’ to swipe the message to reply instead of tap and hold the message.

The Swipe gesture has been available in iOS for quite some time now.
