ISLAMABAD – National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Rawalpindi Director General Irfan Mangi, who was part of the six-member Panamagate joint investigation team formed by the Supreme Court, called on the judges conducting trial of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and family members in corruption cases.
Media reports say the DG NAB met accountability court judges Mohammad Bashir and Arshad Malik in their chambers and later visited the rooms allocated to prosecution team of NAB at the Federal Judicial Complex on Thursday.
The NAB officer, who was appointed at Balochistan when he was included in the JIT and currently heading the NAB Rawalpindi, met the judges after the time for proceedings had ended and his meeting with Judge Malik lasted for more than one hour.
When Mangi came out of the room, he told reporters, in response to a question, that his visit was related to administrative matters.
A spokesman for NAB said that the DG had came here for inspection in order to resolve the problems related to furniture, air conditioning and store facilities being faced by the anti-graft buster’s lawyers.
NAB had filed three references against the former premier, his children – Maryam, Hassan, Husain Nawaz – and son-in-law Captain (retd) Safdar in the light of the verdict in the Panama Paper case announced by the apex court last year.
The references pertaining to Avenfield properties, Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Flagship Investment were assigned to Judge Bashir at the the start. The accountability court judge deciding the Avenfield reference sentenced Nawaz Sharif, Maryam and Safdar to jail for different time period.
Later, the remaining two references were transferred to Justice Malik after the Islamabad High Court approved a plead filed by the former prime minister in this regard.
