Gullu Butt hugs Tahirul Qadri at Supreme Court (VIDEO)

ISLAMABAD – Gullu Butt, the infamous baton-wielding man caught vandalising property during violence in Model Town in 2014, approached Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief Tahirul Qadri to hug him at the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

Shahid Aziz, alias Gullu Butt, tried to shake Dr Qadri’s hands and hug him when the latter arrived at the court for the Model Town case hearing but the PAT leader did not exchange the same courteous gesture until security officials intervened and pulled Butt away.

Meanwhile, the top court wrapped up the Model Town case and directed the Punjab government to constitute a new Joint Investigation Team (JIT). The directive was made as a larger bench of the top court, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar, resumed hearing of a suo motu case over the matter.

Gullu Butt was accused of rowdyism, obstructing public servants in discharge of official duties, and smashing private vehicles with a club outside Minhajul Quran Secretariat in Model Town on June 17, 2014 when a heavy police contingent was engaged with protesting workers of Dr Tahirul Qadri.

He was sentenced to 11 years and three months in prison by an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Oct 30, 2014 under five sections of laws and fined Rs100,000. But, he was released from Kot Lakhpat jail in March last year after the LHC set aside his term under Section 7 of the ATA and Butt had completed his maximum imprisonment of two years under the PPC.
