Lioness put to death at Lahore Zoo in first ever case of animal euthanasia in Pakistan

LAHORE – In the first time in its history, management at the Lahore Zoo has decided to euthanise a lioness suffering from paralysis for eight years.

The decision to euthanise lioness Fairy was taken at a session of management committee formed to decide on the matter. The lioness was going through a miserable and painful disease. Chances of her recovering from the condition were remote.

In Fairy’s case, chemical euthanasia will be conducted. An initial injection will be given to achieve extreme sedation. A second lethal injection will be then administered to cull her peacefully.

Euthanasia is a management tool that is used to deal with challenged, aged, critically injured and diseased animals. In cases where the suffering of the animal supersedes its well-being, the animals are euthanized.
