LAHORE – Saba’s in laws claimed that she committed suicide. They called Saba’s family to inform about her death hours after she had already succumbed to her fate, only because the hospital would not hand her lifeless body without consent of her family.
Saba’s story unfolded this way according to her younger brother, Muhammad Anas Sadiq.
Muhammad claims his sister got murdered. Well, even if it really was suicide then under such circumstances it should be deemed to be murder. Domestic abuse has been the cause of distress in many households. Husbands and in laws alike often corner the naive wife when she is simply trying her best to prove herself to the family she will be sharing her future with.
At least 180 cases of domestic violence were reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in 2017, including 94 women murdered by close family members. That is just one Province itself.
Pakistan ranked 150th out of 153 in the Women, Peace and Security Index. Around 27 per cent of women in Pakistan experience intimate partner or domestic violence in their lifetime and only 51 percent feel safe in their own communities.
We hope justice is done soon, Saba.
