LAHORE – The Lahore High Court has ordered the Punjab government to include a separate column in marriage certificate (Nikahnama) to add details of dowry items given by bride’s parents.
The court further directed the government to make legislation in this regard so the problems faced by divorced women to get back the dowry items at the time of dissolution of marriage could be solved.
Announcing the decision after a petition filed by a woman, Justice Tariq Iftikhar Ahmad said that a column should be there to benefit the brides legally and socially.
The petitioner had challenged a decision of a Bahwalpur-based local court in which the prices of dowry items were not estimated correctly.
The menace of dowry is a threat to modern Pakistani society, the court remarked.
The judge directed the law secretary to take up the matter with authorities in order to make legislation as soon as possible.
