NAIROBI (Web Desk) – The nationwide blackout that hit Kenya on Tuesday was caused by a rogue monkey tripping a transformer at a hydropower plant, leading to the loss of more than 180 megawatts from the grid, Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) said.
In a statement, the company said this tripping resulted in a chain reaction causing the loss of power from the plant and triggering a national blackout at around 11.30 a.m local time.
The company maintained that this was an isolated incident and that power machinery had been electrically fenced to keep away marauding wild animals.
It took almost four hours to restore the power. Interestingly, the monkey survived its adventure.
