ISLAMABAD – The Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), Mian Saqib Nisar quipped about his heartbeat in the court quoting former premier Nawaz Sharif’s lawyer, Khawaja Haris.
The top judge while hearing a case regarding NAB’s appeal against the suspension of Sharifs’ conviction in Avenfield reference told Khawaja Haris, “my doctor says my heartbeat increases every time in your presence”.
Moreover, the CJP asked Khawaja Haris if he had any objections on the inclusion of Justice Asif Saeed Khosa in the larger bench, a remark which caused the courtroom to erupt in laughter.

Justice Khosa’s reference in the case bears a special meaning as he had written dissenting notes in the Supreme Court’s Panamagate case verdict. He headed the five-member bench which gave an interim split decision by 2:3 in the Panama case.
Justice Khosa, in his note shared widely on media, cited a quote from novel The Godfather, adding that other institutions failed or refused to probe Nawaz Sharif.
”Behind every great fortune there is a crime,” was the one-liner Justice Khosa picked from Mario Puzo’s famous piece.
A three-member bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar and comprising Justice Mushir Alam and Justice Mazhar Alam Miankhel, held the preliminary hearing of the NAB appeal on Monday.
In a major relief to the embattled Sharif family, the bench ordered that the defendants’ bail in the case would be maintained while the NAB plea would be heard separately.
Chief Justice of Pakistan, Mian Saqib Nisar underwent angioplasty at a hospital in Rawalpindi last week. The top judge came to his office to perform duties a day after his surgery.
