LAHORE (Web Desk) – The security agencies have issued a new security plan for the Zimbabwean cricket team which is scheduled to arrive in Lahore later this month.
According to the new VIP security plan, 6,000 policemen will be deployed to provide security to the visiting team. 3,000 policemen will be stationed inside the stadium at the time matches will be played.
About 60 vehicles will be escort the cricket team, while helicopters will conduct the surveillance.
The Zimbabwean team is scheduled to arrive on May 19 and play two Twenty20 internationals on May 22 and 24 and three one-day internationals on May 26, 29 and 31. All matches are to be played in Lahore.
No Test team has visited Pakistan since militants attacked the visiting Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore in 2009.
On Friday, Pakistan’s cricket chief confirmed that Zimbabwe would be touring the country as scheduled after a major militant attack put the visit – the first by a Test playing nation in six years — in doubt.
Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) released a statement on Thursday saying the tour would not go ahead due to the “security risk” in the wake of an attack on minority Shiites in Karachi on Wednesday that left 45 dead.
But a ZC spokesman issued an apology 20 minutes later, saying the abandonment was not confirmed.
