Boeing 737 with over 100 on board crashes at Cuban airport

HAVANA – According to Cuba’s state-run television, a Boeing 737 crashed shortly after a takeoff from José Marti International Airport in Cuba.

The plane was headed for Holguin on the eastern side of the island from Havana when it crashed between the airport and the nearby town of Santiago de Las Vegas. The country’s President Miguel Díaz-Canel has reportedly arrived at the scene of the incident.

According to Cuba’s ambassador in the US José Ramón Cabañas, there were 104 passengers onboard.

The plane appears to be heavily damaged and burnt, while firefighters are trying to extinguish the fire. There is no information on whether anyone survived yet.

The aircraft was reportedly rented by Cubana de Aviación national airline from Blue Panorama.
