BENGALURU – An Indian air force (IAF) pilot died after two Surya Kiran jets crashed in the southern Indian state of Karnataka today.
According to Indian media, the incident occurred during an air show rehearsal when two aircraft collided with one another at Bengaluru airport.
The jets suffered a head-on collision, resulting in total damage to the aircraft.

The aircraft burst into flames immediately after the crash, the pilots, however, ejected successfully from both of the aircraft before the incident.
Fighter planes crashes are not uncommon in India which is in the midst of upgrading its Soviet-era military.

More than 30 fighters have crashed in India since 2012, with most accidents blamed on ageing jets.
More than 170 Air Force pilots have died in accidents in the past three decades, mostly in incidents involving Soviet-era MiGs — unflatteringly dubbed “flying coffins”.
Last May, two air force pilots were killed after their Russian-made jet crashed near the border with China.
