KARACHI (News Desk) – In a bid to transform Prime Minister Nawaz’s promises to end electricity loadshedding by 2018 into reality, Ministry of Water and Power plans to increase the wind power generation capacity of country to 1,530MW, the Dawn reported while quoting unnamed sources.
Currently five wind power projects installed in Gharo-Jhampir wind corridor are collectively producing 250MW electricity while within a year more 22 windmill power projects are expected to be installed.
Pakistan’s 1,046km-long coastal lines located in Sindh and Balochistan have great capacity to meet power needs by generating 50,000MW electricity through windmill projects and in the first phase power projects are being installed at Gharo-Keti Bander and Hyderabad regions, the report added.
“In Balochistan as many as nine windmill projects are in final stages of construction in Gharo area and several other places have also been identified for installation of more projects,” it said.
The newspaper also quoted CEO Uni-Energy Muhammad Kasim Hasham as saying that a foreign investment of over $107.50 million has been made in windmill sector. The annual cost of operations and maintenance of these projects will also be as low as $2.196 million, he said.
