Convict Imran in Zainab case appeals to LHC to revoke death penalty, claims not guilty

LAHORE- Imran Ali- a convict in Zainab Ansari’s rape and murder case, on Tuesday, has appealed to the Lahore High Court against the ruling that has awarded him death penalty four times. The verdict of his conviction was announced by an Anti-terrorism Court (ATC) on Saturday.

The appeal was submitted by Jail officials in the high court on the behalf of Imran, in which the accused claims to be ‘not guilty’.

In the appeal, Imran, while asking to nullify the ATC’s decision, took the stance, “The trial was conducted in haste and legal requirements were not fulfilled during the trial.”

The four death penalties awarded to Imran were for kidnapping, raping and murdering 6-year-old Zainab, and for committing an act of terrorism- punishable under Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA), Section 7.

The Offender faces further charges in the cases of at least seven other children he attacked and raped, five of those seven were murdered.

According to AFP, Imran had confessed to all eight attacks, including Zainab’s kidnapping, rape, and murder.

His DNA was also a match to the DNA of suspect in Zainab and seven other such cases.

Earlier, Imran had claimed to be possessed by a demon. According to him, it was the demon who made him rape and kill little girls.

Zainab Ansari’s rape and murder caused a stir in the country with extreme pressure on government and police to capture the responsible. Zainab’s body was found from a pile of trash on 9th January 2018.
