Polio eradication campaign kickstarted in Sindh, Balochistan

KARACHI – The provincial governments of Sindh and Balochistan have launched a polio eradication campaign in the province starting from Monday.

More than 2.5 million children under the age of five will be administered drops during a three-day anti-polio campaign to be launched across Balochistan on Monday.

Over 8.7 million children under the age of five years will be administered anti-polio drops across the Sindh province in five-day polio eradication campaign.

In Karachi, 2.4 million children will be targeted. Over 12,000 volunteers and 5,000 policemen will protect polio workers in an effort to vaccinate every child below the age of five in a week-long campaign.

In 2017, eight polio cases were reported from Sindh. However, so far no polio cases surfaced in the province in 2018.

Pakistan is one of only three countries in the world, along with Afghanistan and Nigeria that suffers from endemic polio, a childhood virus that can cause paralysis or death.
