TAXILA – Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Saturday expressed hope that an extension of Rangers’ powers in Karachi would be resolved in a day and two.
The new Sindh chief minister, he hoped, would help solve the matter. It is a matter of concern that the issue of extension of the powers of Rangers has been made controversial, he added.
Speaking to media persons, Nisar said, “We are making efforts for peace in Karachi in consultation with the Sindh government.”
He added the task of the Rangers, which operated under the Interior Ministry, was to uphold security. The force, he added, had the complete support of the federal government.
“It cannot happen that we do not pass on powers to Rangers and expect them to perform,” he said.
He recalled that the law and order situation in Karachi was abysmal in 2013, which is why the Rangers had been called in to contain the situation.
In two and a half years, Rangers had sacrificed their lives to keep peace and improve the situation in Karachi, he added.
Extension in the powers of Rangers would further improve the situation in the provincial capital, he observed.
He said the operation in Karachi was started in consultation with the provincial government and on the instructions of the Supreme Court.
