ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia’s army chief of staff was shot dead by his own bodyguard amid a failed coup attempt in capital Addis Ababa on Sunday.
General Seare Mekonnen, along with northern Amhara region`s chief officer, died trying to prevent a coup attempt against the administration in the region.
According to the media details, the prime minister’s press secretary told international news agency this morning that there had been a failed coup attempt against the regional government of Amhara one of nine federal states of Ethiopia.
It is yet unclear who might be behind the unrest, meanwhile, no group had publicly claimed responsibility.
Ethiopia, a nation of 100 million people, is due to hold a national parliamentary election next year. Several opposition groups have called for the polls to be held on time despite the ongoing unrest.
