Kim Kardashian is renaming her new shape wear line after getting a dressing-down from many people, including the mayor of Kyoto, Japan.
Kardashian said she had announced the Kimono products in June “with the best intentions in mind,” and she appreciated the feedback she had received.
“My brands and products are built with inclusivity and diversity at their core and after careful thought and consideration, I will be launching my Solutionwear brand under a new name,” she wrote on Twitter.
The reality TV star announced her new shape wear line last Tuesday and immediately came under fire since it had the same name as a traditional Japanese silk robe.
Although the “Kimono” name is a pun on Kardashian’s first name, it also reeks of cultural appropriation. Kimono is a traditional Chinese garment and the word itself means “thing that’s worn.” It refers to long robes with sashes worn at formal occasions such as weddings and funerals. Her use of the word on undergarments and filing for a trademark provoked many people.
The fashion mogul has previously received backlash for wearing Fulani braids, donning an Indian headpiece and appearing to be in blackface.
