Lobbying against govt-backed candidate’s selection as SNGPL chairman in full swing

ISLAMABAD – Some insiders of Prime Minister Secretariat have planned a ploy to block selection of Rizwanullah Khan as Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) and appoint their blue-eyed, it emerged on Monday.

Election for new the board of directors’ chairman will be held today while the federal cabinet has nominated Rizwanullah, who is former CEO of Coca Cola, as its candidate for the post.

The opponents of the cabinet decision have also nominated two persons to contest for the same post while they, according to a local newspaper, would go to any length to get planted their favourite candidate as chairman.

It emerged further that these elements wanted to see an important personality of the former board of directors as the chairman.

The entire ploy against the cabinet decision has actually been designed to give unfair advantage to a person in the PM secretariat.

Source went on to say that the administration of the SNGPL is also backing this lobbying.

If they succeed in their plan, favourite managing director will also be appointed by removing the incumbent Amir Tufail.

The plot does not stop here as the planner has also picked a person to get him appointed as SGM. The nominee, whose interview was held by violating the set procedure, belongs to the city of a ‘remote control’ civil servant.

The government had already managed to reduce the board of directors from 14 to 12. Chairman is also among the 12 member team.

With this move, several private members have been shown doors while the governments in a surprised move using its regulatory authority have also managed to appoint ten members of its choice. The government holds 56% shares in the SNGPL.

Ahmad Aqeel is the only private member in the board of directors. Earlier, Mahmood Mirza, Mustafa Khan and Mian Misbahur Rehman were its private members.

Rizwanullah is a corporate professional and holds good repute due to its professionalism and impartiality, which poses threat to bureaucracy that wants to bring a weak chairman in order to control the SNGPL.

Sources in industry expressed concern over it saying the new board and expulsion of private members have raised questions about the future of the company.

An interesting fact is that the SNGPL is running headless as there is no permanent head of it for last one and half year.

Petroleum Division had proposed two names who include Roohi R Khan and Rizwan-ullah khan for the possible chair of board of directors of SNGPL.

However, cabinet turned down the nomination of Roohi R Khan, former chairperson of the board of directors, to elect as next chairman.

The non-election of the Rizwanullah Khan will give an impression that ‘remote control’ civil servants have defeated the federal cabinet.
