Michael Thomson becomes Aitchison College new principal

LAHORE (Staff Report) – Ending a months’ long controversy over removal of Aitchison College, Lahore principal Agha Ghazanfar; Mr Michael Thomson has been appointed as the new principal of the college after board of governor formally approved his appointment on Wednesday.

Since July 2015 Ameer Hussain has been functioning as interim principal of Aitchison College, Lahore.

According to Dr Umar Saif, former Aitchison student and member of a committee which was designated to search new principal for the college, said in a facebook that the appointment of Michael Thomson was made in a unanimous decision.

“[I] Hope we can move beyond controversies towards a modern, world-class institution which respects merit, well-rounded education and excellence in academics and sports,” he said.

The new principal is expected to assume his position in the coming week.

The Aitchison College controversy came to light in July 2015 when the then principal of Aitchison College, Agha Ghazanfar, was removed from his post for allegedly not allowing nepotism under his watch and refusing to unfairly grant admission to the descendants of the rich and influential.

Members of Aitchison’s board had decided Mr Ghazanfar’s fate, with exception of one member, all agreeing to sack him.

Mr Ameer Hassan, the then Head Master, was given the charge of acting Principal of the college for an indefinite period afterwards.
