Senate body questions Sindh High Court stay orders against PEMRA s Inam Ghar ban

ISLAMABAD: Senate Standing Committee on Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage has asked the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) to take action against television channels violating its rules and regulations regarding the sanctity of Ramazan.

The committee meeting, held on Thursday, was chaired by Senator Kamil Ali Agha and discussed the Ramazan transmissions of various TV channels.

The committee also discussed the stay order against PEMRA’s decision to ban Geo Entertainment’s “Inam Ghar”.

Chairman PEMRA Absar Alam told the committee that the authority thought that the court would not give relief to the concerned channel on the basis of evidence but its ban was overruled within minutes. He said 96 percent of the populace appreciated the Authority’s decision against Inam Ghar.

He mentioned that PEMRA had provided the court a detailed list of 900 complaints against Dr. Ammir Liaquat’s program.

Senator Nihal Hashmi was of the view that ‘inaam shows’ should be banned during Ramazan next year.

PEMRA has appealed the Sindh High Court’s stay against the ban on Amir Liaquat’s “Inam Ghar”. A Supreme Court bench will hear the appeal on July 4.
