Govt Likely To Table Constitutional Amendment After Sco Summit

ISLAMABAD – The government is expected to present the constitutional amendment in Parliament after the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting.

According to media reports, the constitutional amendment will be brought to Parliament following the SCO meeting on October 15 and 16. The sessions of the National Assembly and the Senate will be convened immediately after the SCO meeting.

The government aims to introduce constitutional amendments with the full consultation of political parties, with voting on the amendments taking place after a formal debate and consensus in both houses of Parliament.

The inside story of a major meeting among leaders at the Presidency has emerged.

The government lacks 5 senators and 7 National Assembly members for the magic number regarding constitutional amendments.

The government wishes to finalise constitutional amendments in the first week of October.

On the other hand, the inside story of the major meeting at the Presidency has also come to light. Maulana Fazlur Rehman stated that he cannot make a decision alone without consensus, and the JUI has prepared 80% of the proposed amendment draft, which will soon be handed over to the negotiation team.

Asif Zardari and Nawaz Sharif assured Maulana Fazlur Rehman of their support.

It is noteworthy that the government had previously summoned sessions of the National Assembly and the Senate to present the constitutional amendment, but it could not be introduced after Maulana Fazlur Rehman declined.
