Parliamentary Sessions In Focus As Coalition Allies Aim To Pass 26th Constitutional Amendments

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan’s coalition government is set to pass much-debated 26th constitutional amendment bill, with both Senate and National Assembly scheduled to convene today on Sunday after furry of meetings over weekend.

The sessions were initially held on late Saturday but were delayed when Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman requested more time for PTI leaders to deliberate on the amendment draft.

Today, National Assembly will reconvene at 6pm, while the Senate session is set for 3pm today. These sessions have faced multiple rescheduling as political discussions intensified in capital city Islamabad, aiming to forge consensus on the proposed amendments.

This weekend was crucial for political negotiations, with both ruling and opposition parties engaging in talks to address key concerns.

The federal cabinet could not approve amendment draft and is expected to reconvene at 2:30 PM today to review the proposal further. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif led the cabinet meeting, attended by significant figures including Attorney General Mansoor Usman and Federal Law Minister Nazir Tarar.

As the sessions unfold, all eyes will be on the potential approval of this significant constitutional amendment.s

The proposed amendments aim to establish a federal constitutional court, raise the retirement age for judges, and change the Chief Justice appointment process. PTI alleges these changes benefit Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, which the government denies.

Federal Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar will present a revised draft to the Cabinet today for approval before it goes to a vote. The PPP is seeking support for the amendments, with major disputes reportedly resolved. The PTI has shown a positive stance but requested more time for internal discussions..
