12 killed, 48 injured as lorry ploughs into crowd at Berlin Christmas market

BERLIN –  As many as 12 people were killed while 48 others were left injured as a lorry ploughed into a busy Christmas market in Berlin on Monday.

The truck jumped the sidewalk about 8 p.m. near the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. Ambulances and heavily armed police rushed to the site soon after the incident.

According to local police, the probability of terror attack can not be neglected in what appeared to be a mere accident.

The police said they later arrested a man near the scene who was suspected of driving the truck, which had been stolen from a worksite in Poland about a two-hour drive from Berlin. A passenger, identified by the authorities as a Polish national, was found dead in the cab.

The incident looked much similar to the one in July when a truck driver ran over and killed more than 80 people during Bastille Day celebrations.

‘People were sitting holding their heads, there were pools of blood on the floor’ said Emma Rushton, a British tourist.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel reacted quickly to the incident, with spokesman Steffen Seibert tweeting: ‘We mourn the dead and hope that the many people injured can be helped’
