ISLAMABAD – Son in law of prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday sought a ban on social media in the purview of blasphemous content.
Delivering a speech on the floor of the lower house, Captain Safdar became emotional and questioned why the Cyber Crime Act was not being implemented.
‘Why are we being forced to lay our lives on the issue? Why PTA does not impose ban on social media? This is going to lead the country towards anarchy,’ Safdar remarked.
The lawmaker lauded Islamabad High Court judge, Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui for taking a firm position on the issue.
The lower house of the parliament resonated with the issue of blasphemous content on Monday as well where some treasury members went to the extreme, demanding government the imposition of a blanket ban on social media.
Not just National Assembly, Senate also discussed the crucial issue which is being heard by the Islamabad High Court.
PPP’s Farhatullah Babar, Senator Usman Kakar of PkMAP and Col (retd) Tahir Mashadi of MQM opined the need of a parliamentary probe to dig out the truth regarding the allegations of blasphemy against bloggers, however Ruling PML-N’s Nehal Hashmi after supporting the proposal called the action of purported bloggers not absolvable even if they had not committed blasphemy.
The IHC has already ordered to block the blasphemous pages on social media. Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui in a series of hearings made emotional remarks and hinted at the possibility of complete ban on social media for unavailability of blocking blasphemous pages.
