UN Security Council to vote on resolution rejecting Trump s Jerusalem move

NEW YORK – The United Nations Security Council is expected to vote on an Egyptian draft resolution against US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The resolution of Egypt, which “calls upon all States to refrain from the establishment of diplomatic missions” in Jerusalem, likely to be vetoed by the US.

The one-page draft resolution expresses “deep regret at recent decisions concerning the status of Jerusalem” and “demands that all States comply with Security Council resolutions regarding the Holy City of Jerusalem, and not to recognize any actions or measures contrary to those resolutions.”

It stresses that the sensitive issued should “be resolved through negotiations,” adding, “Any decisions and actions which purport to have altered the character, status or demographic composition of the Holy City of Jerusalem have no legal effect, are null and void and must be rescinded”.

On December 6, Trump recognised the holy city of Jerusalem as the capital of the illegal state of Israel, plunging the Middle East into a deeper crisis.

“I have determined that it is time to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel,” the president said during a speech in the Diplomatic Reception Room of the White House, ordering the State Department to move the US Embassy in Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

It is to mention here that Israel occupied the eastern part of the city during the Middle East war in 1967 to become it the undivided capital of the illegal state.

The resolution asked the members of UNSC to not endorse any decision, which is contrary to the UN resolution regarding the state.

There are several UN resolutions that urge Israel to withdraw its troop from the occupied area.

According to international media, the Palestinians are expected to approach the UN General Assembly against Trump’s move if the Egyptian resolution is vetoed by the US at the Security Council.

OIC Summit

On December 13, leaders of Islamic countries called for East Jerusalem to be recognized as the capital of Palestine, stating that Donald Trump’s move last week voided any US right to be a mediator of the Palestinian-Israeli peace process.

In a draft communique distributed to reporters, the 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation said the US decision was “null and void legally” and is considered an attack on the rights of the Palestinians.
