Deepika Padukone addresses the stigma attached to mental health

India- Mental health is still seen as a taboo in large parts of the world including India. Actress Deepika Padukone stepped forward to addressed her depression in 2015. Her campaign was appreciated by the majority. She believes the we still have “a long way to go” as addressing the problem won’t eradicate the root cause.

32 year old star started a Live, Laugh, Love foundation standing by her words to spread awareness amongst people. On Friday the charity launched the results from eight major Indian cities and according to the results majority of the people held prejudices against people suffering from mental health issues. These cities included Mumbai and New Delhi.

Three fourth of the people out of 3,556 people who were interviewed sympathized with people facing mental health issues. 3 out 5 people of 3,556 people referred to mentally unstable people with the words “retard”, “crazy” and “stupid”.

However 51% of the participants said they would seek professional help if they suffer from mental health issue which is a great deal as the first step is to accept and take appropriate step towards the betterment.

People are growing out of the “fear” and “shame” attached with seeking professional help. Deepika explained how she is very happy as over three years period the awareness is increasing but she believes they still have a long way to go.
