The top diplomats of United States had earlier considered holding the summit at the Korean demilitarized zone or in Mongolia, however, finalized the city-state of Singapore as the spot.
The announcement comes on the heels of the secretary of state, Mike Pompeo’s arrival in US with three US citizens which North Korea had been holding prisoner. Trump welcomed the rescued prisoners when they landed overnight at Andrews air force base outside Washington.
Following the release, the recently appointed Pompeo and Kim talked about the forthcoming summit.
On the other hand, the official North Korean media quoted Kim as saying the encounter with Trump “would be a historic meeting” and an “excellent first step toward the promotion of the positive situation development in the Korean peninsula and building a good future”.
In his statement on Wednesday, Kim said he released the three Americans after an ‘official suggestion’ from Trump.
Kim-Trump huddle is of historic importance as this will be the first-ever meeting between a sitting US president and a North Korean leader.
