TURBAT – A senior journalist from Balochistan, Nisar Lehri, was gunned down by armed assailants in Mastung, a city located some 50 km from the provincial capital Quetta.
Locals cops said Lehri, who served as the Office Secretary of the Mastung Press Club, was asssasinated near his workplace.
The incident sent shockwaves throughout journalistic community in Pakistan. Media workers in country’s sparsely populated region strongly condemned the killing and are urging authorities to nab the armed men.
The tragic event further heightened concerns about safety of media professionals in region, with increasing demands for better protection for journalists.
The law and order situation in Balochistan remained grim for many years, marked by insurgency, sectarian violence, ethnic tensions and other issues.
