ECP decides to reuse RTS in by-polls

ISLAMABAD – The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has decided to reuse the Results Transmission System (RTS) in the upcoming by-polls scheduled on October 14.

The electoral body made the decision on Thursday, weeks after it faced harsh criticism from political parties due to the glitch in the application, causing a delay in the announcement of results for the General Election held on July 25 this year.

Following the ECP’s decision to use the software in the by-election, letters directing returning officers have been issued.

According to the letters, which state that the use of the RTS is necessary, the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) will provide presiding and assistant presiding officers with the software on their phones for compiling the results.

The RTS system was criticized on a major scale by the pollsters and political forces as the delay in the results of recently held general elections was attributed to the software.

On July 26, ECP secretary Babar Yaqoob had confirmed that the delay had been due to the result transmission system malfunction while data was being entered into it.

Opposition parties have since then called the election rigged, stressing the need for a probe into the RTS fault.

A detailed report on the alleged failure of Result Transmission System (RTS) was also presented to Prime Minister Imran Khan by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senator Muhammad Azam Khan Swati.

Swati, in an hour-long meeting with the incumbent premier, suggested that National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) Chairman Usman Mobeen should be suspended.

The senator believed that a transparent probe was not possible in his presence, moreover, the prime minister asked Swati to consult with the forensic experts before publishing the report and assured him of all of his cooperation.
