Zardari to file appeal against Benazir Bhutto case verdict

LAHORE – Former president and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Asif Ali Zardari will file an appeal against the recently announced anti-terrorism court (ATC) verdict in the Benazir Bhutto assassination case.

On August 31 its verdict after a 10-year trial, the court acquitted five accused for want of evidence, sentenced two cops to jail for ‘mishandling the crime scene’ and declared former military ruler Pervez Musharraf, who was president at the time, an absconder.

The decision to appeal the ATC’s verdict was taken at a high-level party meeting in Bilawal House on Thursday, according to a party statement.

According to PPP Spokesperson Senator Farhatullah Babar, Zardari will file the appeal as victim’s legal heir aggrieved by the verdict. His counsel Sardar Latif Khosa will represent Zardari in the case.
