RIYADH – Saudi Arabia’s air defence system has intercepted two ballistic missiles over the capital city, Riyadh state media reported on Wednesday.
According to Al Ekhbariya, the missiles were fired by Houthi militias from across Yemen’s border.
According to eyewitnesses, panic stirred in the city after four consecutive booms were heard in the city.
On the other hand, Houthi-affiliated website Al-Masirah reported that it fired missiles at ‘economic targets’ in the oil-rich kingdom.
“The missile force struck … economic targets in Riyadh with a salvo of ballistic missiles,” it said in a newsflash.
There was no immediate comment from Saudi authorities.
The Houthis have been sporadically firing missiles over Saudi territory after the kingdom and its allies launched a war in March 2015.
According to U.S. prime contractor Raytheon, Saudi Arabia has intercepted more than 100 tactical ballistic missiles launched from Yemen since the initiation of war against Houthis in 2015.
