Azaan echoed from Spanish palace after 500 years

Tourists wandering Granada’s Alhambra Palace in Spain were in for a surprise when they suddenly heard the Islamic call to prayer (adhan) inside the walls of the beautiful red building.

A video footage of a man reciting the call-to-prayer inside the palace has gone viral.

In the video, Mouaz Al Nass, a Saudi-born musician of Syrian descent, can be seen reciting the azaan inside the palace.

This was the first time in 500 years that the adhan was heard at the historic Qalat Al-Hamra, the Arabic name given to the fortress by the Muslim rulers who built it in the 1330s. It has been almost five centuries since the call to prayer was heard.

The Jeddah-born singer and drummer specialises in Islamic music and has a degree in Management Information System from Syria.

When asked by Ilmfeed why he decided to call out the azaan, he said he felt that the walls had missed “hearing the call to Allah.”
