KARACHI – Karachi has been ranked among the least liveable cities of the world by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) — the research and analysis division of The Economist Group — in a report issued earlier this week.
Out of 140 cities, Karachi has been placed at 134th rank only faring better than Port Moresby, Dhaka, Tripoli, Lagos and Damascus, read The Global Liveability Report 2017.
The ranking of the cities has been determined after studying different qualitative and quantitative factors, including stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure.
The organisation has surveyed only those cities or business centres where people “might want to live in or visit;” therefore, cities like Kabul or Baghdad, where conflict is ongoing, are not part of the survey. However, cities like Damascus, which were in the near past relatively unstable, have been included.
Melbourne has been named as the most liveable city in the world, while Austrian capital, Vienna and Canada’s Vancouver secured second and third place in the ranking.
Karachi is carrying the same rank since 2015, while the city has neither improved nor worsened in any of the five categories for the last three years.
