LAHORE – In a major development in Lahore private college rape allegations, Punjab government high powered committee uncovered disinformation campaign behind social media frenzy.

The committee spearheaded by Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman said claims of rape of first year student was fabricated. It investigated claims following widespread reports that sparked public concern.

The report further revealed that the false allegations were propagated through fake social media accounts, in bid to incite unrest and disrupt law and order.

Several activist, journos, and political commentators reportedly exploited the situation for political gain.

The committee expressed alarm over the manipulation of students and the social disruption caused by the spread of misinformation. It also noted the psychological impact on the alleged victim and her family, recommending that the government provide appropriate support.

The committee lamented college management for its inadequate response to the situation, citing a lack of established protocols for handling such incidents.

The report called for action against those peddling false information on social sites. It called for the development of a comprehensive framework to combat disinformation, educate students about the risks of fake news, and enhance the capacity of law enforcement agencies to effectively manage similar situations.
