IS seizes parts of historic Syrian city of Palmyra

DAMASCUS (Web Desk) – Islamic State fighter on Wednesday advanced in the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra after seizing 1/3rd part of the city, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group.

The fighters took over the parts of Palmyra after heavy clashes with the allied combatants and military.

Earlier this week Islamic State fighters advanced towards the city, Tadmur, but were repelled. The city is home to a UNESCO World Heritage site and Syria’s antiquities chief has said the insurgents would destroy ancient ruins if they took control of it.
