SARAJEVO – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan arrived in Bosnia on Sunday to muster support for the upcoming snap polls, vowing that the death threats won’t deter him.
The 64-years-old leader received a report from National Intelligence Organization (MİT), warning him of an assassination plot, however, Erdogan said on Sunday that he was in Bosnia due to the same report.
Talking to newsmen in Sarajevo, the Turkish president questioned: Is it right, on my part, when thousands of people have come here to meet and communicate with the president, that they would not be able to do this?
“No, this will not work,” he answered in a defiant tone.
Although international media had cited sources in claiming that an assassination bid was on the cards to silence Erdogan, what gave credence to the chilling report was a confirmation by Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdağ, who warned on Saturday of possible “assassination threats” against Erdoğan.
“We are aware that there are circles who are uncomfortable with such a great leader, a man with a cause. We are aware that they want to get rid of our president. These assassination threats are not new, they have always been there,” Bozdağ tweeted.
“But Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is not a man who would be afraid of death threats, or who would turn away from his path and his cause,” he added.

Erdogan became Turkish president in 2014 after having served 11 years as the country’s prime minister. He was successful in quashing a military coup in July 2016, following which he arguably emerged as the most powerful leader in the Muslim world.
The incumbent president called snap elections ahead of schedule for which he is running for the second term.
The idea of an early poll was initially proposed by nationalist allies. The elections had previously been slated for November 2019, however, they would now be held on June 24.
