WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump told Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif that he was “pleased” to meet him during their brief encounter on Sunday before the Arab-Islamic American Summit.
According to media reports, Trump and Nawaz Sharif shook hands and exchanged pleasantries. During the exchange, Trump reportedly told Sharif that he was pleased to meet him to which the Pakistani primier responded that the feeling was mutual.
The prime minister attended the moot on the invitation of the Saudi king. His delegation to the Arab country included several government officials, newsmen, foreign affairs adviser Sartaj Aziz and lawyer Akram Sheikh.
Although premier Nawaz Sharif and Trump met in person for the first time but they had talked to each other over the phone during which the latter had termed Sharif a ‘terrific guy’.
That telephonic conversation made waves across the globe because of Trump’s unprecedented praise for Nawaz’s leadership as well as for Pakistan.
Islamabad released a full transcript of the telephonic conversation in which Trump reportedly said he would love to come to “a fantastic country, a fantastic place of fantastic people.”
“Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, you have a very good reputation. You are a terrific guy. You are doing amazing work which is visible in every way. I am looking forward to seeing you soon,” the statement quoted Trump as saying.
Trump also asked premier Nawaz Sharif to convey to the Pakistani people that they were amazing and all Pakistanis he had known were exceptional people.
