Kurram clashes: Death toll Rises to 21 as violence intensifies

Kurram Clashes Death Toll Rises To 21 As Violence Intensifies

The death toll in Kurram District has risen to 21, with eight more lives lost overnight as clashes between rival tribes enter their fifth day. The conflict, which began over disputes concerning land and trench construction, continues to engulf the Upper, Lower, and Central tehsils of the district.

According to local reports, both sides have engaged in intense firefights across four key areas, with Boshera serving as the focal point of the violence. Armed factions, attempting to build trenches, ignited the conflict, which has now spiraled into a full-scale battle.

Police confirmed the rising death toll and noted that over 30 people have been injured in the ongoing skirmishes. However, some unverified reports suggest that the actual number of casualties is much higher.

In an effort to quell the violence, a jirga has been convened at 10 AM today to discuss the possibility of a ceasefire. The jirga, comprising tribal elders, will attempt to negotiate a truce between the warring parties. To facilitate the peace process, the Kohat Commissioner and the Regional Police Officer have arrived in Parachinar, the administrative capital of Kurram.

Earlier, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur directed the local administration to expedite efforts toward reconciliation, urging tribal leaders to intervene and restore order. Despite these efforts, the use of heavy and automatic weaponry by both sides has made progress towards peace elusive.

As the violence drags on, residents in the region remain on edge, with concerns growing about the conflict’s potential to escalate further if a ceasefire is not reached soon. The situation remains fluid, and the region is closely monitoring the outcome of the jirga’s deliberations.
