ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – The federal government has decided to table the 22nd amendment in Parliament on Monday despite the fact that it has failed to reach a consensus on the proposed constitutional amendment to stop horse-trading in the upcoming Senate elections.
Government will attempt to get the bill approved with the support of parties who back the proposed bill.
Earlier Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif failed to develop a unanimity among political parties in a high level meeting that was attended by representatives of PPP, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), JUI-F, Awami National Party (ANP), PTI, and JI.
PPP and JUI-F categorically rejected the proposal to introduce a new constitutional amendment to check the bad practices in elections whereas PTI, JI and MQM supported the presented draft.
PPP and JUI-F, anyhow, wanted political parties to handle this issue internally according to their party discipline.
Leaders of all political parties had raised their concerns ahead of senate elections scheduled at March 5.
