NEW YORK (Usman Shami)–Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Monday conveyed Pakistan’s concerns to the United States abut India’s ceasefire violations on the Line of Control.
The Prime Minister raised the issue during his meeting with US Secretary of State John Kerry on the side-lines of the 70th UN General Assembly session in New York.
A statement released by Pakistan’s Mission to the United Nations said the Prime Minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to peaceful resolution of all outstanding issues with India through dialogue.
Secretary Kerry said President Obama looks forward to the visit of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to Washington in October.
The Prime Minister highlighted the military achievements against the militants in FATA through Operation Zarb-e-Azb, which is now entering its concluding phase.
He said these successes have improved the security situation in Pakistan.
Secretary Kerry appreciated Pakistan’s counter terrorism efforts and the success of Operation Zarb-e-Azb.
He also expressed condolences over the terrorist attack on Badaber.
Peace and reconciliation efforts in Afghanistan, as well as the security situation in the region were also discussed.
Talking to newsmen after the meeting, Acting Representative of United States for Pakistan and Afghanistan Laurell Miller said the United States urges both Pakistan and India to engage in a dialogue and take steps to de-escalate tension on the borders.
She said Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif had an excellent meeting with Secretary of State John Kerry where they talked about the whole range of issues on the common agenda.
To a question about the heavy cost Pakistan is paying during war against terrorism, Miller said the United States recognizes Pakistan’s sacrifices.
About ongoing reconciliation efforts in Afghanistan, Miller said her government “absolutely and strongly” supports the peace process in Afghanistan.
She said “We appreciate the efforts Pakistan government has taken to that end.
