KABUL – Suicide attackers targeted the Afghan capital Kabul on Friday near a large Shia mosque leaving five people dead while injuring several others.
The blast hit the Qala-e Fatehullah area of the city at around 2 p.M local time, near the Hussainya mosque, one of the biggest Shia centers in the city at a time when the security forces were on alert for possible attacks during Ashura.
According to Interior Ministry spokesman, one suspect was arrested in connection with the incident.
A hospital run by Italian aid group Emergency said five wounded had been brought in following the blast but a witness at the scene said eight or nine people had been wounded or killed.
President Ashraf Ghani in a statement, released shortly after the incident, condemned the attack and called it against humanity and religion.
He said such attacks will not affect the unity among Afghans.
Ghani wished swift recovery to those wounded in the explosion.
The local affiliate of Islamic State has claimed several attacks in Kabul in recent years but the Friday’s explosion had not been claimed by any militant group.
