9-member tribal jirga to ensure peace in North Waziristan after Kharqamar incident

PESHAWAR – A nine-member tribal Jirga has been constituted in North Waziristan to ensure maintenance of peace and stability in the district, the Radio Pakistan reported on Monday.

It is headed by chief of Waziristan Malik Nasrullah Khan.

In a statement in Peshawar, Adviser to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister on merged districts, Ajmal Wazir expressed the hope that the Jirga will utilize its energy for restoring lasting peace in the area.

The formation of Jirga emerged after the Kharqamar check post incident last month.

Wazir visited Miramshah on Sunday and met elders of North Waziristan. They agreed upon the formation of the jirga.

The jirga comprises chief of Waziristan Malak Nasraullah Khan, chief of Dawar Malak Khan Zeb Khan, Malak Shah Nawaz Khan Madakhel, Malak Khan Marjan Dardoni, Malak Habibullah Darpakhel, Malak Jan Faraz Khan Dardoni, Malak Mir Qadar Khan Darpakhel, Malak Ghulam Khan Madarkhel and Malak Peer Aqal Zaman Tapi Dawar.

The government recently announced a compensatory package for the affected families of the incident. It was announced that Rs2.5 million would be given to heirs of those who lost their lives in the incident whereas Rs1m would be given to each injured.

At least 13 people were killed while more than 30 were injured in the clash between armed workers of Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement (PTM) and the Pakistan Army.
