ISLAMABAD – The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has decided to launch a strict crackdown on non-filers starting from October 1, which includes considering proposals such as banning non-filers from traveling abroad.
According to a FBR official, the department will take strong enforcement actions after October 1. The FBR has decided on this crackdown to meet its annual tax target of approximately Rs. 13,000 billion. As part of this campaign, millions of non-filers will be issued final tax notices.
FBR also mentioned that non-filers could face travel bans, and there is a strategy to disconnect their mobile SIMs, electricity, and gas connections. Additionally, there is a proposal to ban non-filers from buying or selling property and vehicles.
The FBR has instructed taxpayers to submit their income tax returns by September 30 for the fiscal year 2024. Those who fail to do so will be subject to double withholding tax, and a large-scale audit of non-compliant taxpayers will be initiated after the deadline.
The FBR plans to collect billions of rupees in taxes from 10 major sectors, including retail, wholesale, transport, real estate, construction, health, and education. The FBR has a complete record of citizens’ transactions, and heavy fines will be imposed in cases of tax evasion or misinformation.
