Two Hazara men killed in Quetta

QUETTA – Two members of the Hazara community, Ghulam Nabi and Muhammad Nabi, were shot dead by unknown armed criminals in Quetta, police said on Monday.

They were travelling in a rickshaw in Sariab area when gunmen opened fire on the vehicle, killing them on the spot. Both were shifted to the Civil Hospital in Quetta, where doctors pronounced them dead.

“The victims were shot in the head and chest,” doctors said.

Sectarian violence has claimed thousands of lives in the country over the past decade. Many of the worst atrocities have taken place in the southwestern province of Balochistan, home to some 200,000 Shias.

Balochistan has long been targeted by militants and has been the scene of several attacks against the Hazara Shia community in recent years.

Separatists demanding more autonomy and control over gas and mineral resources have also frequently targeted security forces, although there has been less violence this year after a security clampdown.
