The Big Sick has been making some big waves since its release in 2016, having been nominated for no less than 15 awards in 2018. And now as of last Thursday, it has taken up its rightful place as a nominee for the prestigious Writers Guild Awards next to Hugh Jackman’s Logan and James Franco’s The Disaster Artist.
Other contenders in the adapted screenplay category of The Writers Guild of America Awards include James Ivory’s screenplay for Call Me by Your Name, Scott Neustadter and Michael H Weber’s screenplay for Franco-starrer The Disaster Artist, the Aaron Sorkin-penned Molly’s Game and the Virgil Williams-Dee Rees collaboration Mudbound.
Written and based on the real life courtship of Kumail Nanjiani (who plays himself), a Pakistani-American comedian based in Chicago who falls in love with an American woman named Emily Gardner.
The movie follows the real life struggles of the two protagonists being an interracial couple with Kumail’s Muslim and Pakistani parents objecting to their unorthodox relationship.
Which is probably why the movie has really resonated with audiences worldwide. It deals with uncharted territory and has catapulted Nanjiani to stardom among the likes of Aziz Ansari and Hassan Minhaj.
The 2018 Writers Guild Awards will take place on February 11 across two separate ceremonies in New York City and Beverly Hills.
