LAHORE – When talking about the best camera in smartphones, HUAWEI P20 Pro is definitely a must mention in 2018. Coming with the world’s most advanced camera system, HUAWEI P20 Pro achieved a DxOMark’s highest overall score of 109, beating Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus by 10 points.
To capture more light for clearer images, HUAWEI P20 Pro is equipped with f/1.8, f/1.6 and f/2.4 wide aperture Leica lenses.
In photographers’ circle, camera sensors are always dominant because larger sensors can help you capture better quality images. The HUAWEI P20 Pro sports a revolutionary and highly-sensitive image sensor of 1/1.7 inches, 170 percent larger than the iPhone X, with a pixel size of 2 μm micrometers – 2.68 times higher than the iPhone X’s 1.22 μm. It is even able to capture low light photos with up to ISO 102400 and produce incredible low-light camera performance even at only one lux.
The first thing to say about Leica Triple Camera is the 40MP RGB sensor. However, Huawei does not only use it for detail capture. Instead, it is used in the synthesis of ultra pixels. That is, every four pixels in 40MP are combined into one pixel, in order to obtain sufficient light to take photos.
Does it sound familiar? Yes, its technology is similar to that of Nokia’s 808 PureView technology many years ago, and the R&D team is also the team from Nokia’s PureView technology.
The camera system is comprised of a 40MP RGB sensor which is in the middle of the three cameras, the other two are the 20MP monochrome sensor and 8MP sensor with the telephoto lens, the former is responsible to capture image detail, the latter serves as a 3x telephoto lens equivalent to 78mm. HUAWEI P20 Pro has an all-new Leica 3x telephoto lens for long-range photography of up to 5x, the 5x tri-lens zoom is a 3x optical zoom plus a synthesis algorithm to achieve 5x zoom.
In actual zoom experience, both 3x and 5x zoom images are clear with sharp edges and no smear. Let’s see one example.
When the light is good, the iPhone X and HUAWEI P20 Pro both actually have good performance, the resolving power and the white balance of both show a very high-level image quality.
Of course, the normal mode of HUAWEI P20 Pro is not the most impressive highlight for consumers. The AI algorithm of Kirin 970, which is mainly adopted in scene recognition, catches everyone’s eye.
The HUAWEI P20 Pro’s AI-powered real-time scene and object recognition technology, according to Huawei, can recognize more than 500 scenarios in 19 categories for users to choose the right skills at the right moment. Once an object or a scene is identified, the smartphone automatically makes adjustments to produce the best possible results.
The actual experience is quite good. When the blue sky, flowers, and green leaves are detected, the phone automatically switches to vivid colors so that users can easily get photos with high color saturation, but which remain a natural look with no overflow effect.
In addition, when a night shooting scene is detected, P20 Pro will automatically start a night mode, which brings an enhanced intelligent photography experience. After the mode is enabled, the HUAWEI P20 Pro determines the exposure time between 3 and 10 seconds based on the specific scenario. Through multiple synthesis and machine algorithms, the details of the shadows are greatly improved without the highlights being over-exposed.
Does the 3-second exposure time need a tripod? The answer is No. The HUAWEI P20 Pro uses Huawei AIS (AI Image Stabilization) technology to recognize objects with an AI algorithm, then filters and corrects images as a result of shifts and blurs caused by an unsteady hand holding.
In actual experience, the night shoot does not demand high requirements for users, as long as the hands do not shake badly. In a word, this mode is easy to use for everyone. So, how amazing are photos taken in the night mode? Let’s take a look at some samples.
From these samples, we can see that the HUAWEI P20 Pro enabled with the supermodel has an obvious improvement in dark details without significantly increasing the smudge and noise. There is no overexposure and dazzling light in the bright area. Overall, the resolution, width, and noise control of the last photo are excellent.
After the experience and comparison, I think the night mode of HUAWEI P20 Pro is undoubtedly the best mobile night mode at the moment. We can easily get high-quality photos through simple operation almost automatic. For night shoots, we don’t need any preparation, AI has already enabled the mode in the background, what we need to do is holding our phone and taking a shoot.
