ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday emphasised on a need to amend the accountability laws to make them stronger.
The prime minister said that fake cases in the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) are damaging its credibility. This statement puts weight behind the demand of other political parties, including Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), which have been called for abolishing what they termed it a “black law”.
He said that the NAB should catch the big fishes instead of indulging in minor cases.
He asserted that the government of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) will implement the decisions of the Supreme Court in letter and spirit.
PAC Chairmanship
The prime minister, who has a strong opinion against the corruption, has also denied giving the chairmanship of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to Shehbaz Sharif, the leader of the opposition in National Assembly.
“Designating Shehbaz as PAC chairman would be tantamount to a joke with the nation,” he commented, adding that the PML-N president is facing corruption probe.
Drive Against Money-Laundering
PM Imran said that the drive against the money-laundering is in the full swing and yielding results. Around $15 billion worth properties have been detected only in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, he said.
The government is making efforts to sign agreements with various countries to bring back the plundered money, he said, adding that pacts have been inked with Switzerland and Britain.
Criticism from the opposition have doubled after the properties in foreign countries were detected, he said.
China Visit
Commenting about his recent tour to China, the prime minister said that the trip remained successful above and beyond all expectations. It will yield long-lasting results, he said, adding visits by former PMs were not enough successful.
Talking about the agreements with China, the prime minister said that the details about these deals could not be made public.
However, he hoped that Pakistan’s balance-of-payments would be stable with Chinese assistance, adding that trade and investment will also boost with it.
U-turns
The PM, who has been under criticism for his U-turns on various issues, defended his strategy. “Napoleon and Hitler met disaster as they did not take U-turn,” he said.
He said, “Someone is not a leader if he/she does not take U-turn”.
Talking about former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s recent court statement of distancing himself from Qatari letters, he said Sharif had did not take u-turn but lied before the court.
