BIRMINGHAM (Web Desk) – England were 120 without loss in their second innings, a lead of 17 runs, at stumps on the third day of the third Test against Pakistan at Edgbaston on Friday.
Alastair Cook, the England captain, was 64 not out and Alex Hales 50 not out, with the duo having compiled their first century stand in 18 innings together as a Test match opening pair.
Earlier, Pakistan were bowled out for 400 in reply to England’s first innings 297, a lead of 103 runs.
Misbah-ul-Haq, who started the day at the crease following Azhar Ali’s last ball dismissal on Thursday, was the mainstay for Pakistan before dragging on against James Anderson for 56 while Sarfraz Ahmed, with a typically jaunty innings, added priceless runs as England worked their way through a flimsy lower order with the last five wickets falling for 42.
England had scored 297 runs in its first innings.
Azhar Ali is so far the top scorer at 139 runs, followed by Sami at 82 runs.
Aslam was run out for 82 after being called for a quick single by Azhar who was dropped twice before completing his 10th Test century.
Misbah-ul-Haq and Sarfaraz Ahmad are currently batting in the field
Sohail Khan took five wickets for 96 for Pakistan, a mark Jimmy Anderson and company will be looking at least to emulate on the second day.
Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq won the toss and elected to field.
The four-match series currently stands level at one-one.
